Utilidata says Ohio project expected to deliver millions in savings to electric power customers

PROVIDENCE – Utilidata Inc. said a new project with American Electric Power in Ohio will help the utility company deliver additional energy savings to customers – $210 million in bill savings over a 15-year period.
The global software company, in a news release last week, said the project is part of AEP Ohio’s efforts to expand its use of smart grid technology. As a result, Utilidata’s AdaptiVolt technology will be deployed on portions of the electric system throughout Ohio, serving nearly 119,000 customers.
Utilidata’s AdaptiVolt technology uses real-time information from the distribution grid to optimize electric power delivery. It helps reduce losses and save energy, as electricity travels from substations through the electric distribution system and ultimately to homes and businesses, Utilidata explained in its release.
“Through this project and partnerships with other major utilities, we have found that our real-time data is the key to making actionable decisions about energy conservation, reliability and security. This not only makes the electric grid smarter, it also benefits customers by reducing overall energy consumption,” Josh Brumberger, chief commercial officer for Utilidata, said in a statement.
Julie Sloat, AEP Ohio president and chief operating officer, said this latest project builds upon the “successful” gridSMART demonstration project, which began in 2009.
“This technology will provide real-time insights that allow us to improve both the quality and reliability of service for customers. We look forward to expanding this program and deploying the technology on additional circuits this year,” Sloat said, adding it will help customers gain better control of energy use, while saving money and reducing energy consumption at the same time.
Through gridSMART Phase 2, Utilidata will deploy its AdaptiVolt technology on 160 circuits, which is expected to save AEP Ohio customers 235,390 megawatt hours annually.
In addition to AEP Ohio, Utilidata’s partnerships with other major utilities across the country include National Grid, Pacific Gas & Electric, Ameren Illinois and Vectren.
