PROVIDENCE – Marcel Valois has left his senior adviser position at R.I. Commerce Corp. to take a job as the first executive director for the American Council of Engineering Companies of Rhode Island, a member organization of the Washington, D.C.-based American Council of Engineering Companies.

His last day at the state agency was Sept. 30, according to a Commerce RI spokesman. It was not immediately known if he will be replaced.

ACEC-RI will represent Rhode Island’s professional engineering community, representing more than 30 independent companies engaged in design and engineering of transportation, environmental, industrial, energy, land development and other infrastructure projects on behalf of clients in public and private sectors.

ACEC-RI, whose mission is to advance the business, education, community engagement and growth of its member firms, will take the place of Rhode Island Consulting Engineers, a professional association that has represented the interests of independent engineering consulting firms in Rhode Island for 25 years, according to a news release.

The ACEC is a national federation of 52 state and regional organizations.

Valois said in a statement released on Monday that he is looking forward to working with ACEC-RI members.

“Rhode Island is fortunate to have such a deep presence of professional engineering companies that provide world class services. They are an important part of our state’s economy,” Valois said.

Valois also served as a cabinet member during the administrations of former Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and Lincoln Almond. Valois also was the area vice president of Penske Automotive Group and executive vice president of the Blackstone Valley Development Foundation Inc.

John Shevlin, senior vice president at Pare Corp. in Lincoln and president of ACEC-RI, said, “We are looking forward to Rhode Island’s leading engineering companies being more engaged in helping to propel the Rhode Island economy forward and enhancing and safeguarding the state’s wonderful quality of life. We are eager to demonstrate our member firms’ continuing professional contributions to the state’s safety, health and physical environment.”
