Vanderbilt Grace recognized as ‘clubby’

Posted:

NEWPORT – The Vanderbilt Grace Hotel was recognized for its “clubby atmosphere” on this year’s Fodor’s 100 Hotel Awards.

Fodor’s, travel and tourism information publisher, ranked the winning hotels in eight categories: New & Noteworthy, Grande Dame, Casual Chic, Design, Local Flavor, Clubby Atmosphere, Luxurious Retreat, and Trusted Brand.

“Searching for your very own pied-à-terre? Look no further than these 14 remarkable urban retreats, which offer elegantly decorated rooms and a hipper social scene than most private clubs or apartment buildings. You’ll feel like an in-the-know local with benefits – like room service and a guaranteed spot at the bar – the minute you check in,” the website said about the “clubby” winners.

Vanderbilt placed along with the 101 Hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland; The Ace Hotel and Bowery Hotel in New York City; and Liberty Hotel Boston, among others.

The Newport hotel was first built in 1909 as a men’s social club, then turned into a YMCA during the Great Depression, then an inn the 1990s and finally, it underwent a renovation after being bought by the Grace Hotels Group last year for $10 million.

“Beyond the slightly formal salons, elegant Muse restaurant, and luxuriant spa and indoor pool, the hotel’s 33 spacious suites reflect an unfussy, contemporary aesthetic, with muted colors, mod lighting, flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. Up on the roof, a widow’s walk with 360-degree city and sea views is the place to be at sunset,” Fodor’s review said.

Vanderbilt Grace’s pros, according to Fodor’s, are: a rich history, swanky spa and facilities, and highly personal service. Its cons are that it’s on “a narrow street that’s very busy in the summer” and is “a bit formal for some tastes.”
