Verizon, AT&T invest in R.I. networks

PROVIDENCE – AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications released this week figures on how much they have invested in their Rhode Island networks.
Verizon said it spent more than $100 million in capital expenditures locally in 2011, while AT&T said it spent more that $40 million from 2009 through 2011. Neither company had their sum vetted externally for accuracy.
Verizon said it extended its Fios service in 2011, making it available to “hundreds of thousands” of Rhode Island homes and businesses. Verizon claimed it deployed fiber-optic links to connect 81 wireless carrier cell sites throughout the state.
In its release, AT&T said it made nearly 140 wireless network upgrades in three key areas: new cell sites or towers; deployment of faster fiber-optic connections to about 70 cell sites; and about 70 "extra layer[s] of frequency to cell sites."
The total dollar figure did not include payroll/labor costs for either company.

Unfortunately, with all their investment, Verizon has not seen fit to extend FiOs to parts of Jefferson Blvd in Warwick, an obscure business location in central RI Friday, February 17, 2012|Report this
