Verizon: Mobile use surged at Super Bowl

Football fans were mobile at Super Bowl LI in Houston on Feb. 5, spending plenty of time on their smartphones while watching the big game between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.

Verizon released statistics from the game earlier this week showing that 57 percent more data was used at the stadium compared with last year’s game.

The company said the top five uses were: uploading and watching video, social media, web browsing, uploading to the cloud, and sports apps, such as NFL Mobile.

The top three favorite social media apps of Verizon customers were Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

Wireless use hit the highest moment during singer Lady Gaga’s swan dive into the Super Bowl halftime stage, Verizon said.

Verizon said its customers used 86 TB of data throughout the nine days of events, which was 25 percent more than last year’s festivities.

Verizon said it also added 450 percent more network capacity for the Super Bowl.

Maybe the data increase was due to the excitement of the game – the Patriots trailed 21-3 at halftime but came back to win 34-28 in overtime.
