Verizon Communications, through its Verizon Foundation charitable arm, recently provided a $5,000 grant to the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program. The grant, which was presented to UCAP Director Rob DeBlois and students by Michele Cinquegrano, Verizon regional director of public affairs, will provide support to UCAP’s Beyond School programs. Specifically, the grant will fund UCAP’s Math Homework Club and Robotics program for the 2011-2012 academic year.
UCAP is an alternative public middle school founded in 1989. It enrolls students from Central Falls, Cranston and Providence who have been held back at least one year. At UCAP, these students are given the opportunity to accelerate their studies in order to enter high school at an appropriate age. A part of UCAP’s strategy is its Beyond School programs, which includes after-school and weekend activities such as hiking, career mentoring and art classes.
The Verizon Foundation was started in 2000 to provide technical, financial and human resources to programs in two primary areas: education and literacy, and safety and health. &#8226
