Verizon rolls out 4G in R.I.

PROVIDENCE – Verizon Wireless rolled out its 4G Long Term Evolution network in Rhode Island and Massachusetts Thursday.

Local customers should experience data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second to download and 2 to 5 Mbps to upload. It is about 10 times faster than the 3G network, a spokeswoman said.

The network currently supports 16 devices, including the HTC Rezound and the Droid Razr by Motorola.

Verizon first launched its 4G LTE network in December 2010.

As of Thursday, Rhode Island areas covered by the network are:

  • Central Falls

  • Cranston

  • Cumberland

  • East Providence

  • Lincoln

  • North Providence

  • Providence

  • Warwick

In Massachsuetts:

  • Attleboro

  • Easton

  • Dartmouth

  • Fall River

  • Mansfield

  • New Bedford

  • North Attleboro

  • Norton

  • Raynham

  • Rehoboth

  • Seekonk

  • Swansea

  • Taunton

  • Westport
