Veteran’s Inc. gets $300K in grants

WORCESTER, Mass. – A $225,000 grant for Veteran’s Inc. from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program has been renewed. A second grant $103,666 for Homeless Female Veterans and Veterans with Families also has been awarded to the nonprofit to serve homeless women vets statewide. The organization serves all of New England.
The $225,000 grant will be used to provide specialized employment and training services through a case management approach, relying on federal, state, and local resources, for unemployed homeless male and female veterans, including those with disabilities. Underemployed homeless may also be covered. Funding supports the cost of short-term training classes to help veterans find work.
The grant funding is vital for today’s veterans, said Vincent J. Perrone, president and CEO of Veterans Inc.
“Providing employment and training opportunities to our men and women recently returned from service in Iraq and Afghanistan is critical,” said Perrone. “Having been separated from their jobs and support networks by two, three, and four deployments, re-adjustment and coping with the evils of [post traumatic stress disorder] and traumatic brain injury can be difficult enough, let alone securing and maintaining stable employment.”
Rhode Island and Massachusetts lawmakers, including U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline, D-R.I., agreed the support is crucial.
“Veterans Inc. does an outstanding job helping homeless veterans in Massachusetts find employment and get back on their feet, and this grant will help make sure it can continue this important work,” Warren said.
“On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no soldier behind and as a nation we have a responsibility to leave no veteran behind,” said Cicilline. “I’m glad Veterans Inc. will use these federal funds to help homeless veterans transition back to civilian life and secure good paying jobs.”
The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans/DOL Best Practices project has cited Veterans Inc. for best practices in applying the grant funding. Since 1991, Veterans Inc. has helped more than 55,000 veterans in need. The agency operates offices and programs in all six New England states.
