Volunteers needed for STEM in the Middle 2015

PROVIDENCE – Industry professionals in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields are needed as volunteer chaperones for “STEM in the Middle 2015,” according to Tech Collective, Rhode Island’s information technology and bioscience industry organization.

The fourth annual STEM in the Middle, which is a girls career expo, will be held Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. at the Rhode Island STEM Center at Rhode Island College. Volunteers are needed to provide an “extra pair of hands” in the workshops, according to JoAnn Johnson, manager of youth and education programs at Tech Collective.
Those interested in chaperoning can contact her at (401) 521-7805, ext. 103 or at jjohnson@tech-collective.org.
Presenters include the U.S. Navy, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Rhode Island College, Fab Newport, Dassault Systemes Simulia, NASA, Leidtke Designs, the Ocean Exploration Trust at the University of Rhode Island, Ahlers Designs and Amgen, Johnson said.

STEM in the Middle aims to raise awareness and participation in the STEM fields at the middle school level. Students attend hands-on workshops throughout the day, learning about computer technology and programming, social media, mathematics, geographic information systems, chemistry, 3D printing and electronics, and how they all tie into STEM.
Johnson said approximately 125 girls and 13 teachers are expected to attend the event from from four schools: Times 2 STEM Academy, Sophia Academy (an all girls’ middle school) and Paul Cuffee Charter School, all in Providence, as well as Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls.
Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, director of the R.I. Department of Health, will be the lunch speaker, she said.
“STEM in the Middle fulfills a critical need for interactive and participatory programs for middle school students, especially girls,” Carol Giuriceo, director of the Rhode Island STEM Center, has said.
