WESTERLY – Westerly Community Credit Union last week showed support for local athletes, sports programs and schools, donating all the proceeds from the 28th annual Holiday Basketball Tournament to Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, Stonington and Westerly high school sports boosters. Each school received a check for $2,801.61 for their basketball teams’ hard work, determination and participation in the tournament.
The 2011 tournament, held Dec. 27-30, raised a total of $11,206.45. The Westerly Community Credit Union is the sole sponsor of the tournament, and the event has raised over $166,398.25 since its inception in 1984.
“WCCU has always been a very community-oriented institution,” said Steve White, WCCU president & CEO. “‘We couldn’t be happier being the sole sponsor of this event for the past 28 years and raising money to help our communities’ young adults.”
