W&I doc: Safe embryo transfer needs testing

PROVIDENCE – Dr. Brenna Anderson, of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital, says in a recently published article that risks of preterm birth need to be considered when evaluating whether in vitro fertilization is appropriate for an individual.
Anderson, also an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, published her commentary in the current issue of BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Anderson specifically suggests calculating the risk of preterm birth using five clinical factors: gestational age at birth, birth weight, gender, receipt of antenatal corticosteroids and multiple gestations. •
