W&I physician explores less expensive reproductive technology

PROVIDENCE – With in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer remaining prohibitively expensive, researchers around the world have been pursuing ovarian stimulation medications. Dr. Ruben Alvero of Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island recently published results of a study he performed in The New England Journal of Medicine on the drug therapies being developed.

Alvero and his team compared the effectiveness of letrozole, clomiphene and gonadotropins and determined that clomiphene should be the standard treatment for unexplained infertility.

Among the complications sometimes seen with ovarian stimulation therapies are multiple simultaneous gestations and pre-term birth. Alvero’s team determined that clomiphene produced maximum efficacy and minim complications compared to the other two medications.
