PBN: You’ve authored more than 150 original papers and scholarly publications, and the 23rd edition of Williams Obstetrics. In addition, you’ve served as a past member of the editorial board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and as past editor-in-chief for obstetrics of the journal Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey. Is it safe to say you enjoy writing?

ROUSE: Writing is one of the chief pleasures of my job. It gives me a sense of purpose and accomplishment and, unlike many other things, it is enduring, since once published, the words become immortal. That said, I’m often terrified that I will not be able to write another paper. It is by no means always easy.

PBN: Tell us about your responsibilities as the associate editor of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

ROUSE: The journal receives about 2,000 unsolicited manuscripts a year. I am responsible for about 500 of them, deciding whether they should go out for review, soliciting reviewers (three per manuscript) and then, on the basis of the reviews and my own judgment, deciding whether the manuscript should be published in our journal. In my previous role for The Green Journal, my reviews were suggestions to the editor on whether to publish a given article or not. I am now making those actual decisions, which are critical for both the authors and the journal.

PBN: How long have you been involved with this publication and what kind of items does it include?

ROUSE: The overarching goal of Obstetrics & Gynecology is to publish research that leads to better care and better outcomes for pregnant women and their babies. I published my first paper in this journal more than 20 years ago, and have reviewed for the journal for almost as long. •
