WJAR-TV raises $63K

CRANSTON – WJAR-TV NBC 10’s Thanksgiving Telethon, which took place on Nov. 14, raised $63,632 through online and call-in pledges from viewers.
NBC 10 partnered with Shaw’s and The Salvation Army to raise money to provide Thanksgiving food baskets for families in need throughout Southern New England.
“NBC 10 is grateful to our loyal and generous viewers who took the time to call in or pledge a donation online during our 10 Cares telethon,” said Chris Lanni, news director. “With viewer donations and the generous support of Shaw’s, who donated $30,000, Thanksgiving will be a little brighter for our neighbors.”
More than 530 viewers made donations during the 15-hour telethon last week. The average donation was $51 with four donors giving between $500 and $1,000 each. The Salvation Army estimates that using the money raised, they will be able to provide food to more than 14,000 people in need this Thanksgiving.
For those who missed the telethon, but would like to donate non-perishable food items, Shaw’s supermarkets will accept donations through Monday, Nov. 25, in their Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts markets. Requested items include: rice, pasta, corn, peas, green beans, assorted vegetables, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, soup, spaghetti sauce and dessert items. The Salvation Army will provide fresh carrots and potatoes for each food basket.
Monetary donations are still being accepted by the Salvation Army through NBC 10’s website: www.turnto10.com or by mailing a check to the Salvation Army at 386 Broad Street, Providence, R.I. 02907.
