Wagner appointed to National Assessment Governing Board

PROVIDENCE – Ken Wagner, the state education commissioner, has been named to the National Assessment Governing Board, overseeing The Nation’s Report Card.
The announcement about Wagner’s appointment was made Friday by Acting U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr.
“Ken is a dedicated, innovative and forward-thinking leader and educator,” King said in a statement. “We look forward to utilizing his incredible talent and expertise in our work to ensure students are prepared to succeed in college, careers and life.”

Wagner, who was appointed in the category of “chief state school officer,” will help set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as The Nation’s Report Card.
NAEP makes information available on student performance to policymakers and the public in nearly 12 subjects.
Wagner, who was appointed R.I. education commissioner in July, served six years with the New York State Education Department where he served as senior deputy commissioner for education policy; associate commissioner for curriculum, assessment and educational technology; and assistant commissioner for data systems.
The appointment to the governing board is through September 2019.

Wagner takes office as the governing board prepares for the first-ever Technology and Engineering Literacy assessment, results of which will be released this spring.
