Wal-Mart now cashing checks in Rhode Island

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Wal-Mart Stores Inc. beginning this month will cash checks for customers in Rhode Island.

The retail giant recently announced the nine Wal-Mart stores in Rhode Island can now cash eligible checks at the cost of 50 cents each. Rhode Island joins 47 other states where the service is provided. Customers can now cash pre-printed checks, government checks, federal and state tax refunds, social security and disability assistance, and other government checks, according to a press release.

“According to the [Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.], more than 25 percent of Rhode Island households are either unbanked or underbanked – the highest rate in New England,” said Glen Spencer, regional manager of Southern New England Wal-Mart stores. “A low cost, more convenient check-cashing option can keep more money in our customers’ pockets, making a real impact, especially during one of the busiest times of the year for check cashing – tax season.”

There are nine Wal-Mart stores in Rhode Island, including Coventry, Cranston, Newport, North Kingston, North Smithfield, Providence and Warwick.
