WalletHub: region 13th lowest in U.S. for women-owned businesses

PROVIDENCE – Among the best and worst metro areas for women-owned businesses, the Providence metro ranks on the lower end.
According to WalletHub’s latest survey, the Providence metro ranked 88th out of the top 100 metro areas in the country, and even lower in the subcategory of overall new business friendliness, coming in fourth lowest.
The Providence metro did fare better in subcategories of female entrepreneurship, and business climate for women, coming in 34th and 37th, respectively.
The Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin, Tenn., metro ranked first in the nation as the best for women-owned businesses, while San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., metro ranked last.
Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Mass.-N.H., ranked 61st overall on the personal finance website’s list.
To help women find the “most fertile ground for their enterprises,” WalletHub said it compared the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas across 10 key metrics indicating friendliness toward this group.
WalletHub looked at percentage of women-owned businesses, average revenue growth of women-owned businesses, presence of women’s business centers and industry variety for women-owned firms, among other factors.
