WalletHub: Providence 16th worst city for families

PROVIDENCE – Providence ranks as the 16th worst city for families, according to WalletHub, which ranked 150 of the country’s most populated cities.
The personal finance website took into account “essential family dynamics” such as housing costs, school and health care systems quality, and fun and recreation opportunities to come up with the best and worst cities for families list.
It said 40 percent of all moves take place during the summer, and noted that the average American can expect to move an estimated 11.7 times during his or her lifetime, citing U.S. Census Bureau statistics.
“Moving can be a sign of either opportunity – a new job or long-term wealth accumulation, for instance – or of instability like foreclosure or job loss. The key in either case – whether you’re a newly married couple or a victim of America’s economic transition – is to choose an area conducive to economic prosperity and the overall pursuit of happiness,” WalletHub said.
Providence, which ranked 135th overall, had its best score came in the family activities and fun subcategory, where it ranked 32nd. It also ranked 58th for health and safety.
But it fared the worst in affordability (145th), and not too much better in socioeconomic environment (137th). Rhode Island’s capital city placed 121st in education and child care.
Worcester, Mass., was the highest ranking New England city at 78th.
The top 10 cities were: Overland Park, Kan.; Plano, Texas; Virginia Beach, Va.; Lincoln, Neb.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Madison, Wis.; Fremont, Calif.; Chesapeake, Va.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Grand Prairie, Texas. Jackson, Miss., placed last on the list.
