PROVIDENCE – Providence is the worst city for baseball fans, according to WalletHub’s latest study.
Providence ranked last among 272 of the most populated U.S. cities that WalletHub studied to determine the best and worst cities for baseball fans – cities with at least one college baseball or major league baseball team were chosen. It studied data including performance level of each city’s teams, average ticket and minimum season ticket prices, stadium accessibility and more.
Though Providence lacks a major league team, it does boast several college teams – the Brown University Bears and Rhode Island College Anchormen.
Other Rhode Island communities with college baseball teams ranked higher on the list – Smithfield, home of the Bryant University Bulldogs, ranked 58th, and Kingston, home to the University of Rhode Island’s Rams, was 91st.
Boston – known for the Boston Red Sox – placed 21st on the list.
Interestingly, Pawtucket, home to the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Triple-A Red Sox affiliate, which may move to Providence if the new owners get their way, is not mentioned on the list.
Providence scored so low for several reasons, according to the personal finance website. It was 266th for team performance level, 238th for stadium accessibility and 269th for fan friendliness and engagement (number of Twitter followers plus number of Facebook “likes” per capita). It received its best rank – 48th – in number of championships won. It placed 170th in number of division championships won and 205th for number of sports bars per capita.
The top five cities for baseball fans in order are: St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Cleveland.
