PROVIDENCE – Despite being home to the nation’s oldest Fourth of July celebration in Bristol, Rhode Island, for the second year in a row, is considered one of the least patriotic states.
Personal finance website WalletHub released its 2016 list of the Most Patriotic States in time for the Fourth of July, and the Ocean State improved only one spot from last year, ranking 47th, or fourth worst, on the list. Massachusetts did not fare much better, as it ranked 45th.
The most patriotic states?
Virginia topped the list, followed by Alaska, South Carolina, Colorado and Georgia.
New Hampshire was the only New England state among the top 10 most patriotic.
To determine the most patriotic states, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 12 key metrics, including measures such as military engagement, number of veterans, voting habits and civic education.
Rhode Island had the second-lowest percentage of residents who enlisted in the military, ahead of only North Dakota.

And, of the 13 original colonies, only Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and New Hampshire cracked the top 10.
WalletHub also said red states are more patriotic than blue.
