PROVIDENCE – If you’re looking for a summer road trip destination, Oregon is the top spot.

Despite its beaches, Rhode Island, unfortunately, ranks among the bottom 10 states as a summer road trip destination, according to WalletHub.

The personal finance website ranked the best and worst states for summer road trips, considering such things as attractions, road conditions, costs and weather. It said that approximately 85 percent of Americans – a 13 percent increase since 2014 – are planning a summer vacation, and that 90 percent of them will be taking to the road.

WalletHub said it compared the 50 U.S. states “to find the most fun, scenic and wallet-friendly road-trip destinations – and the ones that’ll have them busting a U-turn.”

After Oregon, the rest of the top 10 states are: Nevada, Minnesota, Washington, Ohio, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, North Carolina and Idaho.

Connecticut is the worst state for a summer road trip. The rest of the bottom 10? North Dakota, Delaware, Mississippi, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Rhode Island, Michigan and New Jersey.

Rhode Island did rank second for the most national park units per square mile. Massachusetts ranked first. And Rhode Island ranked 12th for road and safety conditions.

But the Ocean State was among the most expensive states for camping, and ranked 34th for fun and scenic attractions and 47th for its high three-star hotel prices.
