PROVIDENCE – Despite having beautiful beaches and top-notch restaurants, Rhode Island is one of the unhappiest states in the nation, according to WalletHub’s latest survey.
The personal finance website said the Ocean State ranked 41st among all 50 states and the District of Columbia when it comes to happiness. It studied such things as obesity and binge-drinking rates as well as suicide rates, sports participation rates and life expectancy.

Rhode Island scored even lower on the subcategory of community, environment and recreational activities, coming in at 45th. It fared a little better in the work environment subcategory, ranking 37th.

Massachusetts, on the other hand, is one of the happiest states in the country, ranking ninth. It placed the highest among the New England states. Vermont was next at 13th, followed by New Hampshire, 16th; Connecticut, 22nd, and Maine, 32nd.
The happiest state? Utah, followed by Minnesota, Hawaii, Colorado and North Dakota.
The unhappiest state? West Virginia. It was preceded by Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.

WalletHub said life satisfaction rises as income rises, but only up to $75,000 a year.

“Income isn’t the only determinant of personal happiness. Apart from financial security, a pleasant state of being also depends on one’s mental and physical health, job satisfaction, positive feelings, environment, social connectivity and general outlook on life,” WalletHub said.
