PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranks near the middle when it comes to the best and worst states for nurses, according to a survey by WalletHub.
Rhode Island comes in at No. 29 among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, but it jumps to No. 3 in the survey subcategory of “work environment.” However, it’s seventh from the bottom in the subcategory of “opportunity and competition.”

The personal finance website did the survey in honor of National Nurses Week, which begins May 6. It said the nursing industry is expected to grow faster than any other occupation through 2022. WalletHub studied several metrics, including monthly median starting salary, average number of hours worked, number of health care facilities per capita and nursing job openings per capita, to come up with the rankings.

Washington is the best state for nurses, according to the survey, followed by Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas. New Hampshire cracked the top 10 at No. 8. Massachusetts ranked No. 11, but is expected to be one of the states with the most competition for nursing jobs in 2022. Maine was No. 34; Connecticut, No. 36; and Vermont, No. 38.
Louisiana is the worst state for nurses, according to WalletHub.
