WalletHub: R.I. 31st for underprivileged kids

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island came in at 31st in a listing of the best and worst states for underprivileged children, according to WalletHub’s latest poll.
The personal finance website, which also included Washington D.C. in the list, named New Hampshire as the best state for children, giving it high scores in the subcategories of early foundations and economic well-being and health.
Washington D.C. was last; Mississippi ranked 50th.
Rhode Island ranked lowest among the New England states. It came in 45th in the subcategory of early foundations and economic well-being and health, but climbed to 21st in the health subcategory, and 28th in the education subcategory.
The remainder of the New England states were ranked as follows: Connecticut was fourth, Massachusetts was ninth, Vermont was 12th and Maine was 26th.
About a fifth, or 14.7 million, of all children in America live below the poverty line, according to the Children’s Defense Fund.
In light of Child Support Awareness Month and International Youth Day, WalletHub looked at the welfare of young people throughout the nation, basing its comparison on 15 key metrics, ranging from infant death rates to child food-insecurity rates to the percentage of maltreated children. It also looked at the percentage of children in foster care, the percentage of children in single-parent families, percentage of children living in below-poverty income and public high school graduation rate.
