WalletHub: Scottsdale, not Providence, best city for job seekers

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s capital city is not the best place for job seekers in 2017, according to WalletHub.

The financial services website on Wednesday released 2017’s Best & Worst Cities for Jobs, placing Providence 94th on a list of 150 of the most populated U.S. cities.

The top five cities for jobs? Scottsdale, Ariz.; Plano, Texas; Orlando, Fla.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; and San Francisco. Boston is the highest-ranking New England city on the list at No. 54.
Detroit was last on the list, and Worcester, Mass., was not far behind at No. 144.

Providence was among five cities identified as having the shortest time working and commuting. The others are Tallahassee, Fla.; Springfield, Mo.; Madison, Wis.; and Rochester, N.Y.

In the subcategory of socioeconomic environment, Providence’s rank improved to 64th.

WalletHub said it looked at 23 “key indicators of job market strength,” such as unemployment rate, industry variety, the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, percentage of employed residents who live under the poverty line, working and commuting time, employee benefits and median annual income, to come up with its findings.
