Walmart Foundation seeking R.I. nonprofits to apply for grants

The Walmart Foundation is accepting grant applications to its State Giving Program until April 15 at 11:59 p.m. Rhode Island-based nonprofits can apply for grants between $25,000 and $200,000 to support programs that focus on hunger relief and healthy eating, career opportunities and disaster preparedness.

In 2015, R.I.-based charities including the Newport YMCA and Ronald McDonald House were awarded a total of $405,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program.

“At Walmart, our mission is to create opportunities so people can live better,” said Chris Buchanan, director of Walmart public affairs and government relations. “In addition to the thousands of community service hours our associates perform and the in-kind donations that are spread throughout the communities we serve, these grants allow us to help local nonprofit organizations fulfill their mission and continue on their path of service.”

Established in 2008, associate-headed State Advisory Councils work with the Walmart Foundation to identify needs within their state, review grant requests and make funding recommendations.

Once the current application window closes, Rhode Island nonprofits will have one additional opportunity to apply for a grant from Aug. 29 to Sept. 2.
