If you’re a fan of cop shows like CSI – and a brainiac – Materials Science Associates could have a job for you.
The primary mission of the North Kingstown company is forensic analysis, but it works chiefly with civil cases, not criminal. “We do a lot of mass tort,” said founder and President John Jarrell. “We provide highly trained, in-house experts in medical fields, science and engineering.”
Jarrell can’t offer specifics about any cases, due to client confidentiality.
The company also provides expert consulting for top manufacturers involved in biomedical and engineering projects. “If you’ve got a project that involves a skill your team doesn’t have, we can help,” Jarrell said.
Demand has the company growing. Revenue for 2011 was $249,306; for 2013, it was $799,348. That’s a three-year increase of 221 percent.
The company began as a one-man operation. Jarrell’s field is medical science. Though he’s not a physician, he’s been doing this kind of work since his junior year at Brown, working for one of his professors.
He launched the company in 1993. There are now about 13 experts on the team. “We’d like to convert more to full time, but this is usually something college professors do as part-time freelancers.”
Though the work takes Jarrell’s team all over the country, the company is growing because of Jarrell’s roots in the Ocean State.
He adds that recruitment can be a challenge. “We’d like to bring on more people with skills that fall into the work we do,” he said. “And we’d like to offer more services to companies [that are] working to develop better products.
