Warwick challenges T.F. Green extension

WARWICK – The city’s legal challenge to Federal Aviation Administration approval of plans to extend the T.F. Green Airport runway has been filed in the U.S Court of Appeals for District of Columbia Circuit in Washington, D.C., the attorney representing the city confirmed Tuesday.

Steven Taber of the Irvine, Calif., Taber Law Group said the appeal had been received by the federal court in Providence Tuesday. He said he could not discuss any details of the appeal until it is docketed in the court system.

The appeal was launched by the Warwick City Council, which voted last week to hire legal representation to fight the plan, which will require the demolition of homes near the runway.

In addition to lengthening the runway by 1,530 feet, the proposed changes include construction of new cargo and U.S. Postal Service facilities, a new fuel farm, an expansion of the passenger terminal, the demolition of a hanger, and the shifting of the crosswind runway 100 feet to the north.

  1. Perhaps the ctiy council should concentrate on saving taxpayer money rather than challenging a decision that has litlle chance of changing the overall and approved plan. As the mayor stated, any changes won in a lawsuit will be minimal and quite frankly, the city could use the additional income that may come from the expansion and other ancillary businesses in and areound the airport. Remember the boost Warwick got when Southwest came to town. Perhaps an expansion of freight service, not only the U. S. Post Office but, FedEX, UPS and DHL could bring significant income to the city. We already have the airort and that is not going to change. I sympathize with the immediate neighborhoods that are affected by this expansion. However, we have to think about the city overall when we are faced with tough decisions. Let’s get on with it and make it work to our economic advantage.

  2. The council did not act resposibly in this matter. There are many “constituents” in Warwick that are neighbors to the airport looking for a resolution not another delay. The people and business community of RI deserve better than this. Wasteful and shameful is the only way to cahracterize this action.
