PROVIDENCE – WaterFire Providence announced on Thursday a new digital initiative known as Ignite Providence, designed to help visitors explore more of the Providence area’s art, culture and food scene on WaterFire weekends. In addition to introducing people to the city’s various events, the nonprofit arts organization hopes that Ignite Providence will inspire visitors to spend more time and money in the local economy.
Ignite Providence is intended to be an easy-to-use tool for visitors who want to enjoy the various arts and culture experiences that the city provides, the organization said in a release. In developing and maintaining this new digital resource, the WaterFire creative team will select art, entertainment and culinary activities that place on the same weekends as the downtown attraction.

“We know that approximately half of our visitors are coming to see WaterFire from out of Rhode Island and for many it’s their first time in our city… We invite our visitors to come a little earlier, stay a little longer and be amazed by what the Creative Capital and Ocean State have to offer,” Peter A. Mello, managing director at WaterFire Providence, said in a statement.

“WaterFire is a major catalyst for visitation to Providence, generating significant hotel room nights for the community on the evenings that lightings occur,” Martha Sheridan, CEO at the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors, said in prepared remarks.

Sheridan noted that WaterFire’s digital initiative works to extend overnight stays and contributes to “increasing overall economic activity associated with those stays.”
Ignite Providence is a WaterFire Providence ArtPlace initiative. In 2012 WaterFire Providence received a grant from ArtPlace America, which helps fund “art and creative placemaking techniques” in the local community, according to the release.
