PROVIDENCE – WaterFire Providence has extended its season with the addition of an 11th Saturday evening lighting on Halloween night.

The Oct. 31 lighting will feature a full WaterFire installation, which is a series of metal baskets – called “braziers” – that hold fires along the Providence River and in the Waterplace Park basin. The fires will be lit at 7 p.m. and will burn until midnight.

WaterFire has previously held late October lightings that featured jack-o’-lanterns in the Waterplace Park basin and Halloween-themed activities.

Last weekend’s lighting was scheduled to be the final WaterFire of the 2009 season. In a news release, the organization announced that a group of sponsors had come forward and agreed to pay for the event on Oct. 31. The sponsors include city hotels and restaurants, the Providence Tourism Council and the Amadeus Project.

WaterFire, now in its 15th year, has become a major draw for downtown Providence and has an annual budget of about $1.7 million. With the Halloween event included, the number of installations this year is five fewer than last year, when there were 16.
