Rebecca “Becky” Moniz, an agent with Weichert, Realtors – Cress & Co., is the recent recipient of the Kent Washington Association of Realtors Good Neighbor Award. PBN: Can you tell us about the award you received and its selection criteria?

MONIZ: It entails spending time and raising money for a cause. At one point, Rhode Island had the second-highest deployment rate per capita. [The task force’s] focus has been on the families that are left behind to keep things in order.

PBN: What types of services does the task force provide?

MONIZ: The RIAR Troop Support Task Force helps advise pre-, post- and during-deployment families on how to attain, maintain and retain housing during Yellow Ribbon Reintegration events. We also volunteer in any capacity requested. Our resources are wide and varied. … With more troops home and less deploying, we feel our role will change. We may focus on keeping our veterans from homelessness. We are at the discussion phase right now.

PBN: In your own words, what’s being a good neighbor all about?

MONIZ: I believe that being a good neighbor is about giving back. I enjoy the freedom and ability to earn a living without fear. I believe the military protects that freedom and keeps me safe here at home. We are all in this together. The least I can do is help soldiers and their families find and keep a home. Also, part of being a good neighbor is stepping up and getting involved. See a need, step up and help. Our function is not money driven, it is time driven. You can throw money at some things, but not this. This is entirely different. •
