With the voters of Plainville, Mass., overwhelmingly approving the building of a slots parlor at the Plainridge Racecourse, the region is one step closer to seeing more gambling competition.
The state is projecting that the creation of a slots parlor close to the border will reduce the revenue that gambling operations in Rhode Island remit to the general fund. And those projections may be underestimating the effects, given that there is the potential for a destination casino soon as well.
How should the state respond to what is expected to be a significant drop in its revenue?
