NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Wide World of Indoor Sports at Quonset Business Park is planning to build a second facility this year, according to the Quonset Development Corporation.

The company will construct an additional 29,000-square-foot building later this year approximately 60 yards to the east of the original facility, which has been open two years.

The QDC’s board of directors approved a new lease with the WWIS to accommodate the expansion at its board meeting on Jan. 20.

In a news release, Quonset Development Corporation said that the new facility “responds to an overwhelming response from the community to participate in the numerous youth and adult sports leagues at WWIS, including soccer, flag football, volleyball, field hockey and lacrosse, to name a few.”

The expansion also includes the acquisition of a 1.7-acre parcel that will increase parking capacity by more than 60 new spaces.

The original 92,000-square-foot facility supports close to 85 full- and part-time jobs, while the new structure will create another 14 full- and part-time jobs.

The WWIS was the first company to take advantage of Quonset’s site-readiness program that streamlines and expedites permitting on 35 pad-ready sites within the business park. Every site has all necessary permitting in place, including permits from the state Department of Environmental Management and Coastal Resources Management Council.

Dan Fawcett, co-owner of the WWIS, praised the site-readiness program at the time of the opening.

“We can attest to the remarkable opportunity that the ‘site-readiness’ program affords the business community. It made a world of a difference in getting our new location built much faster than we ever anticipated,” he said.

He could not be immediately reached for additional comment about the expansion plan.
