Winter storm warning to remain in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday

PROVIDENCE – Monday’s storm is expected to dump anywhere from 6 to 8 inches of snow in Rhode Island, with more anticipated to hit Newport County and the northern tier of the state.
A winter storm warning will remain in effect until Tuesday morning at 7 a.m.
Alan Dunham, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Taunton, said Newport County is expected to get the most snow in the state, at between 8 and 12 inches, and that a blizzard warning is in effect for Cape Cod in Massachusetts.
“Basically the heaviest snow will be during the daylight hours,” Dunham said, adding that the evening commute also will be affected by snow and high winds.
The winter storm warning on the National Weather Service website said that snow will become heavy at times in the mid- to late afternoon, and that snow intensity should diminish by early evening.
“Travel will be slow at best on well-treated surfaces … and quite difficult on any unplowed or untreated surfaces,” it read.

Throughout the day, wind gusts are expected to be between 40 and 50 mph, creating “near blizzard conditions for brief periods of time,” Dunham said.
Dunham said more snow is expected Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but the amount is not yet known.

The R.I. Public Transit Authority said that a number of routes are on detour due to winter weather conditions: routes 6, 14, 27, 29, 49, 55, 58, 60, 64, 71 and 87. RIPTA said riders may expect some delays on all routes due to weather conditions and are advised to use extreme caution at bus stops due to decreased visibility and slippery conditions.
T.F. Green’s website also was showing numerous canceled flights to and from the airport.
In addition, National Grid customers who experience outages should call National Grid’s outage line at (800) 465-1212 immediately to expedite restoration, the utility said.
A list of school closings, parking bans and other snow-related cancellations can be found at turnto10.com/weather/closings.
As of 2:40 p.m., only eight National Grid customers were without power; electricity was expected to be restored by 3:30 or 4:30 p.m., according to the utility.
