Women’s Leadership Council pledges $50K match for Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative

PROVIDENCE – The all-volunteer United Way of Rhode Island’s Women’s Leadership Council has pledged to match all donations to Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative, up to $50,000, until Dec. 31.

Lisa Guillette, chair of the Women’s Leadership Council and executive director of Foster Forward, said: “It’s disturbing that just one-third of our state’s students are reading at the appropriate level at the end of third grade – it’s a rally cry for all of us to come together to support summer learning because it is a strategy we know will help children achieve grade-level reading success.”

On average, those students who participate in the six-week summer educational opportunity gain 15 percent more reading and math skills than those who did not attend summer educational programs.

A collaboration between Hasbro Inc. and UWRI, this year the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative celebrated its fifth anniversary while serving 1,600 youth across 14 Rhode Island programs, but faces budgetary restrictions next year.
