The opportunity to sharpen professional skills is one of the top benefits to working at Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co. Ltd., one of the largest full-service certified public accounting and business consulting firms in New England.

“The partners here have a genuine concern for our employees and their career development,” said June Landry, director of marketing. “We have an in-house program with 78 courses in all. We call it KLR University.”

A curriculum is developed each year to help keep everyone at the firm in compliance with current laws and regulations, and to provide the practical knowledge necessary to perform with greater skill and effectiveness.

Team members enroll in courses selected during annual career discussions with supervisors. Speakers from local universities, specialized trainers and in-house senior level staff are chosen to lead each session.

KLR’s benefits package is generous, with paid health insurance, dental insurance and a 401(k) plan. Younger employees get a bonus when they pass the CPA exam.

During the peak season preceding April’s tax deadline, dinner is served at the office for those who must work late. To tame the tension, the firm hires a massage therapist to visit the office. The day after the tax deadline is a company holiday.

KLR has a wellness program that offers workshops on exercise, diet, sleeping well and stress management. It also includes flu shot clinics, and skin cancer and blood pressure screenings.

Other workplace extras include summer outings, holiday parties, and dry cleaning pick up and return. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the firm closes early every Friday, and in the fall everyone attends a full-day retreat, where they spend the day discussing ideas and enjoying professional camaraderie. •
