Wynn drops bid for Foxborough casino

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Wynn Resorts Ltd. dropped its plan to build a casino here with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, after residents voted in a local election and favored candidates opposing the project, Bloomberg News reported last week.

The result demonstrated the community’s stance, Las Vegas-based Wynn said in an emailed statement distributed by Kraft Group.

The termination of the $1 billion project, which was to be built adjacent to Gillette Stadium, clears the way for a proposal from Caesars Entertainment Corp. at the Suffolk Downs horse racing track in East Boston. The plans were vying for one of three casinos authorized in Massachusetts.

Gov. Deval L. Patrick signed legislation in November calling for the three casinos and a slot-machine parlor. The law divides the state into three regions, allowing one casino in each.

The winning proposals will be picked by the Mass. Gaming Commission, partly on the basis of their potential economic contribution to the state. Before the commission can review any application, the operator must negotiate an agreement with the host community and win a local referendum. Licenses aren’t expected to be awarded until mid-2013. •
