Ximedica adds interactive design, hires interaction designer

PROVIDENCE – Ximedica is adding interactive design to its service offerings, and has hired an interaction designer to make it happen.

Aidan Petrie, chief innovation officer and co-founder of Ximedica, which focuses on development and commercialization of medical devices, described interactive design as “the bridge” between the coded world of technology and the people that have to use it to inform.

He said that acquiring this expertise in-house is “essential” and that Jeff McCloud is joining Ximedica as an interaction designer. McCloud previously designed and produced an arthritis simulation glove to enable a better understanding of physical disabilities.

He also has researched and designed a multi-modal interface to help individuals with traumatic brain injuries to drive safely.

“As the confluence of health and technology continues, Ximedica recognizes that technology and innovation must be driven by the user experience,” according to a company news release.

McCloud, who addresses the topic on his blog at ximedica.com, wrote that his role is to design digital interactions with technology that fit within people’s lives.

He noted the growing trend of mobile and wearable technology, and said this can be applied to medical devices in several ways, including reinforcing healthy behavior such as taking medication on time. He said social networks also can be used to “provide encouragement and empathy to help those suffering from chronic diseases and other ailments.”

“Tracking progress can help individuals take an active role in their care and promote self-efficacy,” McCloud wrote.
