PROVIDENCE – Ximedica announced Tuesday it has purchased the San Francisco-based Bridge Design, providing the Rhode Island-based medical technology development company with a West Coast hub.

Bridge Design staff will continue to operate from its current office in San Francisco, expanding Ximedica’s reach to existing clients while establishing new relationships on the West Coast, according to a news release.

Bridge Design has for more than 20 years worked on design of medical and life sciences products, according to the release, including physical and digital applications.

Bridge Design has 12 employees, according to Bill Evans, the company president and founder, in a telephone interview. Evans will become senior vice president of innovation, overseeing design. Evans did not disclose the sale price.

As a subsidiary, Bridge Design will become known as Bridge Design, a Ximedica company. The acquisition made sense for both parties, and discussions took place over the course of the past year, he said.

Because Ximedica has is an FDA-registered, product development firm, the acquisition will allow Bridge Design to seek out those design opportunities.

“This is really a win-win,” he said. “For Bridge Design, it’s about opening new doors. Our strength and our forte is the early design [phase]. We strengthen the front end of an already strong, larger company.”

Ximedica, which has about 110 employees in Providence, provides research, product development and manufacturing services to medical and health care companies. Its acquisition of Bridge Design is part of an ongoing strategy of expansion, according to the release, which began last year when SV Life Sciences, a Boston private equity firm, purchased a majority stake in the company.

“Ten months ago we partnered with SV Life Sciences and embarked on the next phase of our global growth strategy,” Ximedica CEO and President Randall S. Barko said, in a release.

“The acquisition of Bridge Design moves us further down that path. Bringing together top design and integrated engineering is nothing short of a powerful synergy and we look forward to seeing the impact we can create ahead.”
