PROVIDENCE – Ximedica LLC, a contract developer and manufacturer of medical devices, has announced plans for a 23,000-square-foot expansion of its Providence headquarters.

The additional space will increase Ximedica’s capacity for the manufacturing of both capital equipment and disposables, and will accommodate the increasing demand from current clients as well as projections for additional customers.

“Now is the time to do this. Business has been great, and demand for our services has ticked up,” Dan Reifsteck, chief operating officer of Ximedica, told Providence Business News.

“With signs of the recovery in the economy and the increased confidence of many clients in these areas, we are seeking to stay ahead of the demand on our facilities,” said Reifsteck.

The company first unveiled its expansion plan at MD&D (Medical Development and Manufacturing) East, an expo and conference event held last month in New York City. At the event, Ximedica also announced the launch of a new health care initiative that involves not only the design and manufacture of devices but research to understand how they are used by health care providers and patients, which in turn would inform the design of the environment in which they are used.

“Our clients are increasingly looking to us to provide the kinds of services that a lean development process demands: secure, dedicated space, fully equipped labs and clean rooms – and a sufficient footprint to handle whatever size manufacturing is necessary, from pilot to full-scale assembly,” said Reifsteck. “We’re excited about the plans and look forward to moving in.”

The company, which currently occupies an 80,000 square-foot facility, will expand into an area of its building that previously had been sub-let. Although financial details were not released, the expansion has an expected completion date of early 2011.

Founded in 1985, Ximedica is an ISO 13485:2003 certified and FDA registered provider of contract research, development and manufacturing of medical devices. The firm’s Providence headquarters houses research and design space, dedicated client space and manufacturing and clean rooms. The expansion will complete the second phase of development of the building, which the company purchased in 2006.

Ximedica operates an additional office in Hong Kong to support outsourcing to Asia – where the company has also seen increased demand – but there are no plans to expand that facility.
