YMCAs partner on substance abuse recovery efforts

Posted 2/4/13

WARWICK – A new partnership between The Providence Center and the Greater Providence YMCA to help people in recovery from substance abuse maintain their health and well-being will be announced on Feb. 4 at the Kent County YMCA.

In connection with Y, the Anchor Recovery Community Center in Warwick, one of two such recovery centers in Rhode Island, will be offering the following programs

  • Peer-facilitated recovery support groups tailored to the needs of the community. Current groups include a Latino group, a women’s group, a veterans group, a medical provider group and others.

  • Women’s Wednesday, with one day a week dedicated to women's support.

  • Health, wellness and social activities, including access to YMCA services and a YMCA health navigator.

  • Recovery coaching and mentoring, housing support, 12-step recovery groups, and recovery skill building – classes in exercise, stress management, spirituality/meditation, and expressive arts.

The goal is to support Rhode Islanders in recovery by building a supportive community at the same that they are supported in accessing services to improve their health and wellbeing, according to Providence Center spokeswoman Sara Szeglowski. “Engagement in meaningful activities and building a strong peer support system has proven effective as a means of dramatically reducing the rate of relapse for people with substance abuse problems,” she said.

Among the public officials attending will be Sen. Jack Reed, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, Dr. Michael Fine, director of the R.I. Department of Health, and Craig Stenning, director of the R.I. Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals.
