BOSTON – The New York Yankees are worth 86 percent more than the Boston Red Sox, according to Forbes.

The magazine said the Yankees were worth $1.7 billion, earning the No. 3 spot on its “The World’s Most Valuable Sports Teams” ranking, while the Red Sox, valued at $912 million, came in at No. 31.

The most valuable team in the world was Manchester United, at $1.86 billion, followed by the Dallas Cowboys, $1.81 billion, the Yankees, the Washington Redskins, $1.55 billion, Real Madrid, $1.45 billion, and the New England Patriots, $1.37 billion.

Forbes noted that the Patriots, at No. 6, had higher sponsorship revenue in 2010 and strong demand for tickets despite the highest prices in the league.
