Yoga featured in smoking cessation program

PROVIDENCE – Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society, and nicotine addiction makes many smokers experience withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, depression, sleeplessness and nicotine cravings that make quitting difficult.

The American Cancer Society is encouraging smokers to quit or plan to quit smoking during the 38th annual Great American Smokeout on Thursday, Nov. 20, with The Miriam Hospital is offering a smoking cessation program to help.

Breatheasy is a smoking cessation program that features yoga or health and wellness techniques to help smokers overcome nicotine addiction and quit smoking.
Participants are divided into two smoking cessation groups that incorporate either a yoga program or a health and wellness program.

The study, which has already been successful for many men and women, is still enrolling participants. Financial compensation is also given for completing assessment visits.
