“Phenomenal Women: Fabulous Female Authors of Poetry & Short Prose” is Living Literature’s celebration of the many roles women play throughout their lives.
The program is free, sponsored by Friends of Rochambeau.
Now in its 12th year, Living Literature is an association of performing artists in the Rhode Island area, celebrating the written word through readers’ theatre style performances of non-dramatic literature in schools and community venues throughout southeastern New England.
A trio of Living Literature actors will perform in their unique readers’ theatre style, with Artistic Director, Barry Press on hand to facilitate a discussion following the program. This fifty minute piece, originally created in 2004 in partnership with the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities as part of Women’s History Month, will be performed by Tanya Anderson, Sharon Carpentier, and Nehassaiu de Gannes. It will include the following pieces, as well as some of the authors’ words on their writing process and world view:

The Real Dirt on Farmer John Film Screening & Discussion with Southside Community Land Trust at PPL
Providence Public Library will host a screening The Real Dirt on Farmer John and a discussion led by Southside Community Land Trust. For more information, please call Leo Pollock at Southside: (401)273-9419, ext. 28.
The epic tale of a maverick Midwestern farmer, The Real Dirt on Farmer John documents the dramatic failure of a conventional farming operation and its resurrection into a thriving, organic Community Supported Agriculture farm outside of Chicago. Through highly personal interviews and decades of beautifully textured footage, filmmaker Taggart Siegel shares Farmer John’s haunting and humorous odyssey, capturing what it means to be wildly different in a rural community. Come watch the documentary that the New York Times called, “an inspiring tale of healing, growth, and virtue of conviction,” and Roger Ebert labeled, “A loving, moving, inspiring quirky documentary.”
Immediately following the film, Southside Community Land Trust will lead a discussion on Community Supported Agriculture (CSA): Building Communities Among Farmers & Non-Farmers and its important role in the future of Rhode Island agriculture.
Southside Community Land Trust provides access to land, education and other resources so people in Greater Providence can grow food in environmentally sustainable ways and create community food systems where locally produced, affordable, and healthy food is available to all.
Providence Public Library is committed to providing quality programming on a variety of educational topics. The views and opinions expressed therein are those of the individual presenters and do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of the Library. We welcome community members to work with us to provide free, thought-provoking events of interest.

Martha Rojas Presents "American Imprints: Franklin's Emblems for the New United States" at PPL
Martha E. Rojas, Assistant Professor of English, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, will present “American Imprints: Franklin's Emblems for the New United States”
in conjunction with the Ben Franklin Exhibit at PPL through May 23. She holds a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Stanford University and currently teaches 18th and 19th Century U.S. literature and culture. While at Stanford, Rojas was awarded the Alden Dissertation Prize for “Diplomatic Letters: The Conduct and Culture of Foreign Affairs in the Early Republic.” Her current manuscript is a revision of this project and discusses issues of improvisation and representation as the United States strove to mold itself into a nation among nations. Benjamin Franklin as a republican diplomat at the royal court of France faced a particular difficulty: how to embody the United States. Franklin’s solution drew from his career as a printer. Allowing his own seemingly omnipresent image to circulate as that of an iconic American, he also fashioned, printed and distributed iconic emblems of the United States.

Stop trying to be too many things to too many people?
Companies assume the wider the audience the more likely their brand will succeed and therefore consider everyone as a possible customer. Even though these companies spend a considerable amount of time telling us what they can do and how they do it, the customer never sees specific reasons to consider the company’s product nor why they should buy from that particular company.
This seminar will discus how by focusing on matching up with a narrow group of “the right people” companies can develop true relationships which builds passion amongst those customers.
Dave Lubelczyk of IMAGEIdentity, LTD will present his seminar on Thursday, May 15 at 8:00 a.m. in the Chamber office. This is a free educational opportunity!
Location: 51 Man Mar Dr Plainville, MA
