When President Ken Bertram, above left, and partners took over Cumberland’s Herrick & White Architectural Woodworkers in 2007, a single commercial customer accounted for much of the company’s business. But the Great Recession forced a change in strategy to focus on high-end residential work that has helped revive the business and earn the company a 2014 entrepreneurial-excellence award from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Barrington Architect David Andreozzi wants his profession to get beyond the focus on “starchitects,” trophy homes and massive institutional projects. The Rhode Island native wants to bring quality design principles to a larger part of the population that may not realize its value. So Andreozzi is leading a group of fellow architects in the national Custom Residential Architects Network – part of the American Institute of Architects – in an effort to communicate the value of what they do for clients. more
