When John Mycroft heard the pitch two years ago he was understandably wary. Representatives from Boston-based EnerNOC were telling the executive at Hexagon Metrology in North Kingstown that his company could get paid thousands of dollars a year by agreeing to reduce its energy consumption during peak times. Better yet, EnerNOC would pay to install the equipment necessary to participate in the program.

Last year, in Providence Business News’ first Business Going Green special section, business leaders made the case that going “green” was not only a responsible thing to do, it was a smart investment. Sure, the payoff may be long term, but there is no doubt that environmentally responsible management is a guaranteed hedge against the rising costs of energy and raw materials, as well as the volatile nature of those markets.

TAUNTON – Kopin Corp. (NASDAQ: KOPN), a provider of transistor wafers for cellular phones and wireless networks, last week announced it has secured a $600,000 contract to develop photovoltaic solar cells for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
The contract is the second phase of a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program to develop indium nitride (InN)-based quantum dot solar cell technology. Kopin’s partners on the project include groups at Virginia Tech and Magnolia Optical Technologies.
