Rhode Island has cut state-level tourism-promotion spending 89 percent since 1995. So leaders of the state’s seven regional tourism councils, which have picked up some of the slack for cuts at the top, bristle at suggestions that centralization of visitor marketing is what’s needed to spur growth.

Like many Rhode Island businesses, The NYLO Providence/Warwick Hotel has learned from the string of storms that have caused flooding, power outages and other damage in recent years. This year the Warwick hotel posted warnings, including the one pictured above, cleared and sandbagged its deck and put in place an emergency-communication system for guests that included evacuation plans. Staff members also stayed in rooms there to limit unnecessary travel.

Though holiday-season tourism in the state encompasses much more than December tidings, it still comes down to tying up a package with a nice, pretty bow. Only when you’re talking tourism, the package is a grouping of activities, attractions, eateries and hotels.
