Following a 22-week training program, 54 men and women graduate on Jan. 3 from the 50th Providence Fire Department Training Academy. Graduates were sworn in as members of the department during the ceremony, held at Rhode Island College. For the first time in the department’s history a female candidate, 28-year-old Alison Philbrick, ranked No. 1 in the class. Joining in the ceremony was Mayor Angel Taveras, fifth from the left. more

Known best for its culinary-arts program, Johnson & Wales University offers degrees in the arts and sciences, business, education, nutrition, hospitality and technology. Not typically considered a school for athletes, the university in fact has 22 varsity athletic sports at the Providence campus. Three programs debuted in 2013 –- women’s field hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse – while women’s hockey was added as a club sport this year. This past year, the university also completed construction of the school’s first athletic fields. more
BOSTON – Massachusetts residents who had insurance coverage denied by the United Services Automobile Association because they were previously in a same-sex marriage will now be offered memberships following an agreement with the organization, Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley announced last week. more
MIDDLETOWN – OceanPoint Insurance Agency announced last week that it has acquired Raymond Insurance of Coventry. Kim Raymond, principal of Raymond Insurance, has accepted the position of vice president of West Bay operations for OceanPoint. more
PROVIDENCE – Sen. James C. Sheehan, D-Narragansett, last week presented a $1,300 legislative grant to the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation Inc., and a $900 legislative grant to the Quonset Air Museum. more
