The escalating international concern about climate change puts the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography square in the middle of the discussion. Bruce Corliss was named dean of the school after an international search and was heralded as having just the right combination of an outstanding record in research and education in oceanography, as well as highly regarded management experience in academia. Corliss began as GSO’s dean in September 2012 and discusses what he’s discovered so far and his vision for the future. more
Rhode Island Fast Ferry is looking to begin a high-speed ferry service between North Kingstown’s Quonset Point and Block Island, having applied for a license from the R.I. Division of Public Utilities and Carriers, the ferry service announced Wednesday. more

The SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is towed from Senesco Marine in North Kingstown to Newport June 21 for hauling and painting at the Newport Shipyard. The uncompleted tall ship, named after naval war hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, will be dockside at the shipyard for a fundraising event July 5 and at Fort Adams on July 6 and July 7 for public visits. When completed in 2014, the nonprofit educational vessel will have a capacity for 36 students on overnight trips and 85 for day sails. more
The Block Island Ferry will offer a new line of high-speed transport between Newport and Block Island starting Saturday, June 29, the ferry announced Monday. more
Just back from a monthlong expedition in the waters off Antarctica, the research is far from over for a team from the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography studying the tiny, shrimp-like sea animal called krill, the focus of the expedition. more
