Homeowners who can’t help checking their address on Internet property value trackers like Zillow’s “zestimate” likely weren’t happy with Stan Humphries, the real estate website’s chief economist, when house prices were plunging in recent years. An architect of the algorithm behind the “zestimate,” Humphries is probably more popular now that home prices on Zillow are rising again. 2013 was a very strong year for real estate across the country and even in the economically challenged Providence area, where Humphries was in town recently to network with local real estate agents who use or are looking at using Zillow’s data platform. more

Kimberly S. Washor in June became the first director of the University of Rhode Island’s new Center for Career and Experiential Education. The center combines the missions of two formerly separate offices: Experiential Learning and Community Engagement, along with Career Services and Employer Relations. The change is more than superficial, says Washor, who discusses how it will enhance experiential learning as it informs students’ eventual job searches. more

Jay Sidhu led Customers Bank to the top spot in Bank Director magazine’s 2014 Growth Leaders Ranking, announced April 29. It is the second year in a row Customers Bank earned the top rating, which is for core performance, the most comprehensive of four categories in the rankings, which also included core deposits, net loans and leases and noninterest income. more

Forty-six years is a long time to complete a real estate development. But the transformation of the former Brown and Sharpe mill complex in Providence into the mixed-use Foundry wasn’t a run-of-the-mill construction project. Antonio Guerra purchased the property in 1968, when it had become run-down, commercially obsolete and the city around it was being emptied by the suburbs. Last month, Foundry Associates marked the start of work on the final phase of the complex’s redevelopment, construction of 196 new units to be added to the Promenade Apartments, with a celebration that also remembered Guerra, who died roughly a month earlier. more

His company, Tim Gray Media, is a consultant and contractor for the World War II Foundation, for which he is chairman. Gray collaborates in this work with video-journalist Jim Karpeichik, who owns Ocean State Video. more
